Essentials of Musculoskeletal Imaging is designed as a guide and easy-to-use reference for selecting and interpreting the appropriate imaging modalities to diagnose and evaluate numerous and common musculoskeletal problems. The goal of this text is not to provide in-depth coverage of all imaging modalities for all musculoskeletal conditions but rather to provide the physician with an easy-to-use guide for ordering and interpreting appropriate and cost-effective imaging studies for the most common problems seen in the office. As health care costs escalate, the physician has a responsibility to order only those imaging studies that are cost-effective and have the highest degree of sensitivity and specificity.
This text is the second in the Essentials series published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The structure, organization, and practical approach used in the first book, Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care, has proved to be very popular. This format has been carried forward in this new addition to the series. Most chapters are organized along the following headings: Synonyms, ICD-9 Codes, Definition, History and Physical Findings, Imaging Studies (required for diagnosis, required for comprehensive evaluation, special considerations, and pitfalls), Image Descriptions, and Differential Diagnosis.
The text includes four general sections:
- • Imaging Modalities
- • General Orthopaedics
- • Tumors
- • Pediatric Orthopaedics
And seven anatomic sections. Each anatomic section begins with an overview, followed by chapters that describe specific musculoskeletal problems.
