Authors

William J. O'Brien, PhD, FADM, is professor in the Department of Biologic and Materials Sciences as well as director of the Dental Materials Laboratory at the School of Dentistry, University of Michigan. A former consultant to the World Health Organization, the American Dental Association, and the US Food and Drug Administration, Dr O'Brien has lectured around the country and published more than 100 journal articles. Special honors at the University of Michigan include the Quest for Technology Award and a School of Dentistry Award for teaching excellence. His main research interests are ceramics; surface phenomena; optical properties; sustained release of therapeutic agents; and the innovation process in dentistry, including researcher training and industrial management.
